Cabin Refrigerators FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why are your refrigerators so inexpensive?

A. We fully rebuilt our refrigerators ourselves in our Vallejo Ca. factory and sell direct to you  via the Internet.

Q. Why don't you ship.

A. The cost of packaging and shipping is too expensive. Besides we want you to choose the exact refrigerator you want from our large range. This way everyone is happy with the deal.

Q. My refrigerator is like new but the cooling unit is no good. Do I have to get a rebuilt refrigerator or can I have my unit repaired?

A. We can replace the cooling unit in your refrigerator for even less. Please see our cooling unit section for prices and availability.

Q. Why don't you sell new RV refrigerators?

A. We  specialize in rebuilding and recycling of RV refrigerators. We only sell new when there are virtually no used units available. As with cabin refrigerators, We also find that many new refrigerators will not fit in the original refrigerator space in the RV.

Q, Do you sell new cabin refrigerators?

A. Yes. There are only a limited number of good used cabin unit for us to rebuild. Also some people like to have the refrigerator in their home looking like new.

Q. I have an OLD 30's to 50's Servel can you repair it.

A. No. Mainly because of safety issues, no one, to my knowledge, is still repairing the cooling units of these refrigerators. Click here if you have one. I believe this article will explain why you should replace it. Also the newer units use about 10% of the propane that the old Servels use. So, you will pay for the new unit in a few years.

Q. How do you rebuild the refrigerators?

A. Please see our Repair/Rebuild section.

Q. How much will it cost to fix my refrigerator?

A. Please see our cost repair/replace section.

Q. How often should I have my refrigerator serviced?

A. You should clean the burner and gas jet every six months. Also you should have the gas pressure checked once a year (it needs to be 11" of water column). If the burner is not cleaned or the pressure is low, the burner will start to burn a yellow flame. This will produce soot in the flame pipe and the unit will stop cooling.

Q. Can I use a RV refrigerator in my cabin?

A. Yes all Propane/Gas refrigerators work the same way and you can use a RV unit in a cabin. Some units are not suitable however as they have PC boards that require a full time 12v supply. Some units will only need the 12v for the gas ignition system and the inside light. Also most RV units do not have a metal cabinet so they must be built into some form of box. Note: if you want your refrigerator built into your kitchen cabinets, the RV units are the most suitable.

Q. Should I vent my refrigerator to the outside?

A. Most Propane refrigerators in good condition do not need to be vented, but remember if the burner is dirty the unit will produce Carbon Monoxide! Also the unit will always give off some smell and heat from the burner. I always suggest that the unit be built in and have a vent top and bottom. If the lower vent is on the outside wall you can make it a door were you can service the gas burner with out removing the refrigerator. We have drawings on how to vent these units.
